Sue Carter (Ullswater)

When she was 8 years old, Sue said "I want to do that when I grow up" and low and behold here she is! Sue completed an Outdoor Management degree and travelled around New Zealand before starting work in the outdoor industry in 1996. She says she still loves the work.

Which living person do you most admire?
Not an individual. Rather, those who have suffered, whether physical or mental ailments and give it their all, achieving much more than they thought they were capable of.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Looking forward to a day / activity or event too much, as I'm bound to get upset when things don't go to plan.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Dishonesty. I like my friends to be honest even if it is going to hurt my feelings, but at least you know the truth.

What is your greatest extravagance?
Open boating / caving kit. They charge the earth for it, but they know suckers like me will keep buying it.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?
A day out vertical caving in North Yorkshire, along with coffee and cake in Inglesport Cafe followed by a meal and night out to plan our next adventure.

What is your favourite journey?
Life! Its a long road and it has its ups and down but we all end up at the same destination.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?
Beauty, as it is only skin deep.

On what occasion do you lie?
When I'm trying to intentionally wind somebody up, generally used with a very sarcastic tone of voice for obvious effect.

What do you dislike most about your appearance?
Pull up a chair if you've got a few hours free. I would only be answering this in comparison to what is expected of us by the media, so I'll leave it at that.

When and where were you happiest?
2001 doing a working year in New Zealand, especially during my ski season in Queenstown.

Which talent would you most like to have?
Circus skills, such as diablo, poi, devil sticks and fire breathing, always a crowd pleaser.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My trust of others! I trust people I meet too easily and as a result get stomped on regularly.

What is your most treasured possession?
My bed!

Who are your favourite writers?
Terry Pratchett and his Discworld collection, as they transport you to another, very entertaining reality; Bryce Courtney with The Power Of One and Tandia, as the story tells of an English boy who grows up in South Africa. He has to struggle with his aspirations to be a lawyer and the welterweight champion of the world, against the discriminative, apartheid South African system, during and after the second world war.

Who is your favourite fictional hero?
Rincewind the wizard, from the Discworld novels, as he just wants to be a quiet assistant librarian, but no matter how hard he tries he keeps getting dragged along on adventures.

Is there a motto you live by?
Work smarter, not harder.

What is your favourite meal?
Anything that is cooked for me by somebody else.

What is your favourite piece of music?
You Were Meant For Me by Jewel

What was your worst ever purchase?
I'll let you know when I buy it.

Would you rather be a big fish in a little pond, or a little fish in a big pond?
Definitely a little fish in a big pond, as then you have the room to grow both mentally and physically by learning from those around you.

What is your favourite animal?
My ex-cat Samson. He hated everyone, including me, but with a little persuasion i.e. chicken or ham he would be a big softy.

If you had been the first person on the moon, what would you have said to the world?
The view might be good but the service is terrible.

Tell us a joke.
I don't know any that aren't rude so, I'll pass on that one.

If you could change one law of physics, which would it be and why?
That would have to be the molecular consistency of water to make it breathable to humans.

If you could do one thing to make the world a happier place, what would you do?
Abolish commercialism and materialism.
