Rory Stewart, Senior Instructor, Loch Eil
Rory grew up with a love of the outdoors and the natural history of wild places. After graduating with a degree in biological sciences he taught school before starting his first outdoor job in a Lake District centre. Eventually, he moved north to live and work in Scotland where he has stayed, apart from a season with the British Antarctic Survey and a post-graduate certificate in education in North Wales. In total, he has spent about 15 years at the Loch Eil centre and says he can't imagine a better place to live and work.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Being in a small boat (kayak / canoe / cutter / creel boat) in amongst skerries with the swell surging over the rocks, the screeching of sea birds and the raw tang of the guano hanging in the air.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Taking a baking hood for my stove on expedition and having fresh scones at camp.
What is your favourite journey?
Paddling around the coastline of the Isle of Coll, Inner Hebrides. The coastal scenery and the wildlife is amazing. I've travelled all over the world and haven't found anywhere as good as the Scottish west coast for boating.
What is your favourite piece of music?
Bach's Goldberg Variations played by Murray Perahia.
Which talent would you most like to have?
I'd love to be able to play a musical instrument, such as an accordian.
What is your favourite animal?
Tysties, otherwise known as the black guillemot.
If you could do one thing to make the world a happier place, what would you do?
Abolish the word 'them' as in 'them and us'. People have far more in common than they have differences.
