Howtown, the latest addition to The Outward Bound Trust’s residential centres is iconic Lakeland. Nestling within a secluded and sheltered bay on the shores of Ullswater, this truly magnificent setting is ideally situated for 'doorstep' adventures on the lake and surrounding mountains.
Donated to The Trust by two faithful and generous supporters, the new centre offers frontier adventure for young people in education and in work. With the hills and lake (Ullswater) on its doorstep, the famous Outward Bound experience is there for the taking.

Travel Information
Whether you are coming from inside the UK or from further afield, our aim is to make it as easy as possible for you to get to your chosen Outward Bound centre. There are a number of travel options:
In the car
If you are bringing someone else to start their course, this gives you the chance to enjoy a few hours at the centre, see our facilities and meet some of our instructors. Given all our centres are in particularly beautiful places, you can make the journey a day out together. You may even decide to make a short break out of your journey and we can advise on a selection of hotels and B&Bs close to the centres.
Escorted travel
This is an Outward Bound service which is particularly handy for those of you embarking on a complicated journey - perhaps from abroad - or for those of you who have youngsters attending courses. We have regional pick up points where Outward Bound staff will meet you and escort you on your coach or mini bus journey to the centre. (This service is only available on selected courses.)
Rail pick-ups
For those wishing to travel by rail we offer a pick up service from the station nearest to the centre of your choice. Please call the appropriate centre and they will advise you on pick up times.
Combination travel
It may well suit your plans to combine travel arrangements. For example, you may wish to bring those participating to the centre and then let us drop them back off at the nearest rail station for their return journey. They are likely to be travelling with lots of new-found friends!
International travel
For the increasing number of participants coming from outside the UK, we can advise on the most convenient airports and transport to the escorted travel pick-up point (during the holiday season), or we can arrange an extra night's accommodation if flights are not convenient.
For those attending a course and travelling from France, we have made special arrangements with a partner organisation who will be able to advise on all aspects of courses and travel to your chosen Outward Bound® centre.
