Investing in young people through The Patron's Company
Our network of corporate supporters, The Patron's Company, was founded by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, KG KT, in 1996. Members contribute annually to a bursary fund which provides financial assistance for those young people who couldn't otherwise afford an Outward Bound ® experience.
Often, those who'd most benefit from an Outward Bound® course are the ones who can least afford it. Every year, The Patron's Company bursary fund receives hundreds of applications for financial assistance from youth groups, individuals and schools.
The Patron's Company is flexible enough to allow us to create a package that meets specific corporate social responsibility requirements as well as providing unique opportunities for networking, entertaining clients and involving staff. On average, members of The Patron's Company contribute £15,000 annually.

Get your staff involved
We have a range of ways to help you include your staff in the charitable aims of your organisation:
- Our fundraising challenge events, such as the
Flora London Marathon or our own Charity Challenge offer corporate teams the opportunity to compete against each other in Outward Bound ® activities. Our fundraising team can also help your staff to implement their own fundraising ideas, such as sponsored events.
- Your employees can support our instructors and school staff, meeting and working with young people, giving them encouragement and helping to build their confidence.
- Your staff can also gain key skills through training to work with young people or accompanying them on their course.
At the end of the course, every young person, teacher and course director completes a feedback form. We compile these questionnaires into a full report, with photos, which we'll send to you both in hard copy and on CD.
Direct feedback
As a member of The Patron's Company, you'll receive a report that details exactly how your donation will be spent.
We provide each of our members with a report that details exactly how their donation has been allocated. At the end of their course every young person, teacher and course director completes a feedback form. We compile these questionnaires into a full report, with photos, that we send to members both in hard copy and on CD.
Many of our members use the information in their annual report, website and other publicity material.
Our relationships with our supporters are as varied as the wide range of companies that support us. We communicate regularly with each member to ensure their needs are met and the feedback they receive meets their expectations.
Other benefits
Our donors benefit in numerous ways from their charitable support. Many of our events provide a forum for our donors to build business relatoinships with other members. Our events team can also tailor exclusive events to suit the needs of you and your guests. |

Easynet and The Outward Bound Trust
In recent years Easynet has helped to provide numerous young people throughout the UK with invaluable experiences and opportunities.
In 2006, for example, the company chose to give assistance to disadvantaged schools in East London, whose young people are from low-income, single-parent families. Many of the young people live in extememly difficult home circumstances have special educational needs and learning difficulties, in particular with social interaction and forming relationships.
Our partnership with Easynet exists on a number of levels, from staff volunteering on courses, through raising money in the London Marathon to sponsoring some of our exclusive events.
Easynet plays an active role in our events calendar. In 2006 the company sponsored our fifth Diamond Cup regatta, creating a unique opportunity for the company's staff and their customers from across Europe to get together. Easynet has also, in the past, participated in our golf day at Wentworth and sponsored two fundraising dinners hosted by our chairman, HRH The Duke of York.
First Group with The Outward Bound Trust
Britain's biggest ground-based travel company, First Group plc has been a member of the Patron's Company since 1996 and has developed a close relationship with The Outward Bound Trust. First's membership of The Patron's Company means that branches nationwide can provide financial assistance to their local communities. They've enabled over a thousand 11-18 year olds to experience the magic of Outward Bound.
First has also provided transport for young people to travel to our centres. The company has supported other events too, including the Annual Ball and The Patron's Company dinner. At the Confederation of Passenger Transport dinner First's chief executive Moir Lockhead raised an astonishing £33,000 through an industry-wide campaign.
First generously provides Outward Bound Metro, in Glasgow, with an office, a meeting room, an equipment store and parking for a minibus and canoe trailer.
HSBC and The Outward Bound Trust
In 2003 HSBC Bank began a five year corporate project which aimed to work with disadvantaged young people living in the shadow of their new Head Office in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The project was designed to help the young people realise their potential and become role models within their local community, whilst also providing an opportunity to promote HSBC, "The Local Bank" to its neighbours in the community.
The initiative has been a great success and is now in year four. To date, 450 young people have benefited from the London project, and a further 450 are set to become involved in an additional sister project in Birmingham.
150 young people per year are selected from 5 different schools. It is our aim to include schools representing a cross section of ethnic and cultural communities. These young people then take part in a one day introductory day, and a subsequent 3.5 day residential course. From these participants, 100 are chosen to attend a 7 day residential course, with the aim that 10 young people will be selected to take part in a 3 week Classic Outward Bound ® course.
Another interesting element of the HSBC and Outward Bound project is the involvement of adult Mentors. HSBC nominate 10 staff who act as mentors throughout the programme. They work alongside Outward Bound ® Instructors and school teachers, providing support to the students and an invaluable link into the business world. This is a great personal development experience for the mentors themselves, as they gain understanding of team values, increased leadership skills, refined coaching ability and a greater understanding of young people in their local community. |
